Composters will recycle about 10 tons residential food waste/year for residents

Independence, OR – Through a partnership between Independence Station developer Aldeia, LLC, and NatureMill, Inc., the 15 21st century Oregon Trail pioneers who make their homes in the World’s Greenest Building will recycle more than 10 tons of residential food waste into rich compost each year for use in local gardens for food production. They’ll do it from the convenience of their own kitchens with the help of the world’s first automatic indoor home composter.

“As a partner in Independence Station, NatureMill will feature their products in the homes of the 15 21st pioneers who choose to see just how efficiently they can live,” says Steven Ribeiro of Aldeia, LLC. “NatureMill composters will be among the many technological innovations viewed by tourists and visitors to the building, serving as a fine example of a simple, low cost green idea anyone can use at home.”

Ribeiro plans to have the compact NatureMill automatic composters be part of each kitchen in Independence Station’s 15 distinctive one- and two-bedroom condominiums. Residents will simply deposit daily food scraps into the top of the composter and begin removing rich compost within just two odor-free weeks. With the ability to compost 120 pounds of food scraps each month, NatureMill composters could keep up to 10.5 tons of residents’ food scraps out of landfills each year. They will only use a token amount of the building’s solar and vegetable oil-generated power.
